    Bert Flugelman is an Austrian Jew who came to Australia in 1938 as a refugee following Hitler's annexation of Austria. Between 1947 and 1950 he studied sculpture at the National Art School in Sydney and then left Australia to travel and work in Europe and America. From 1973 to 1983, Flugelman was a lecturer at the South Australian School of Art, Adelaide College of the Arts and Education and was Head of Sculpture. He was also during this time a lecturer at City Art Institute, Sydney. From 1984 to 1990, Flugelman was Senior Lecturer and Fellow at School of Creative Arts, University of Wollongong. In 1991 Flugelman was made Professorial Fellow at the University of Wollongong and was Artist-in-Residence, School of Arts, University of South Australia. In 1995, he received Doctorate of Creative Art (Honoris Causa) and in 1997, he received Australia Council, Visual Arts/Craft Fund Emeritus Award. He is a well respected artist and sculptor, best known for the Dobell Memorial Sculpture, formerly located in Martin Place, Sydney and popularly called the 'Shish Kebab'. His work is in the permanent collections of many galleries and his commissioned sculptures are to be found in many cities including Sydney (Pyramid Tower), Melbourne (Three Sculptures), Adelaide (Spheres), Canberra (Cones) and Wollongong (Wave; Winged Figure).
