The Film Users' Association of NSW organised an inaugural meeting in October 1953 to form a Sydney Film Festival committee. The first Sydney Film Festival was held at University of Sydney in 1954. In 1991 the committee of the Sydney Film Festival formed the Oral History Committee in order to record the history of the Festival. Interviews with forty people were conducted, mainly by film historian Graham Shirley, during 1992. An oral history of the Sydney Film Festival:40 years of film was published in 1993.
