Kevin Weldon, book publisher, was born in Ingham, Queensland in 1933. He began his career in publishing as an apprentice colour etcher and at the age of 23 was appointed Queensland Manager of Grenville Publishing Company. In 1967 he launched the Paul Hamlyn Group in Australia, later acquiring Australian publishers Lansdowne Press, Ure Smith, Jacaranda Press and Rigby, while entering into a joint venture with US animation film producers Hanna Barbera. In 1979 he retired from the Hamlyn Group, later establishing Kevin Weldon & Associates, co-founding Weldon Owen Publishing and Weldon Hardie and finally changing the company name to Weldon International. His many publications include the Macquarie Dictionary range, ‘A Day in the Life of Australia’ and the ‘Australia the Beautiful’ series. Weldon’s other interests include surf lifesaving, flying and sailing. He was awarded the Australia Medal in 1994 for services to publishing and lifesaving.
