From the `David Scott Mitchell papers' (MLMSS 379 Mitchell Library)
Cumberland Place was designed by Francis Greenway in 1825 for Robert Campbell. Campbell never lived in the house, it was occupied by the Bishop of Sydney (Bishop Broughton) in the 1830s and later acquired from Campbell by Mrs Augusta Maria Scott. Mrs Scott's daughter, Miss Augusta Maria Scott married Dr. James Mitchell and after the death of Mrs Scott the Mitchell family moved into the residence.
