    George Mackaness was a biographer and historian who, between 1935 and 1962, edited 46 monographs dealing with significant aspects of Australian history. He was also the author of biographies of William Bligh, Arthur Phillip and Sir Joseph Banks.

    Original manuscript of Mackaness' introductory essay to his 1946 publication of Matthew Flinders' pamphlet 'Observations on the Coasts of Van Diemen's Land on Bass's Strait and its Islands and on part of the Coasts of New South Wales' (first published in 1801), together with the printer's proof and author's corrections.
