  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Iris Chapman Aria, journalist, was born in 1907, daughter of Wykes Strange Chapman Norton and Eva Norton. She was best known for the humorous column she wrote, as Margot Parker, for the magazine Woman (later Woman's Day) from the 1940s to 1974. She also wrote as Iris Dexter for other magazines and newspapers. Sponsored by Associated Newspapers Ltd, from 1943 to 1945 she was an accredited war correspondent to the Australian and British Armies, writing morale building stories, particularly for the wives and mothers of servicemen. She travelled throughout Australia and also to Ceylon, Singapore, Sumatra, Java, Labuan and Moratai during this period. Aria married twice - first to Harry Dexter, and later to the Bulletin black and white artist Aubrey (George) Aria. She died in St. Vincent's Hospital, Sydney on 24 March 1974.
