The Sydney Maritime Museum was founded in 1965 by a group of individuals interested in restoring and preserving the 1902 Vice Regal steam yacht 'Lady Hopetoun'. The Muesum was known originally as the Lady Hopetoun and Port Jackson Marine Steam Museum. The Museum's collection now includes a fleet of vessels, restored by volunteers, along with papers, photographs and artifacts relating to the maritime history of New South Wales.

From 1983 onward volunteer members of the Sydney Maritime Museum conducted an Oral History Project. The interviews were conducted with men and women involved in maritime industries and occupations, or with maritime interests with the aim of recording much of the maritime history of Sydney and New South Wales. The interviews, 1997-1999, were conducted by volunteers Katja Grynberg and Susi Phillips.
