  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Sir Philip Woolcott Game (1876-1961), governor, was born on 30 March 1876 at Streatham, Surrey, England, son of George Beale Game, a merchant of Broadway, Worcestershire, and his wife Clara, née Vincent.

In 1908 Game married Gwendolen Margaret Hughes-Gibb. Lady Game's mother was Eleanor Hughes-Gibb, nee Wigram. Sir Henry Francis Wigram and his wife Agnes Vernon were Lady Game's uncle and aunt.

He had a distinguished career in the Royal Artillery and the Royal Air Force and held positions in the Air Ministry, 1919-1929, retiring with the rank of Air Vice-Marshal.

In 1930, at the height of the Depression, he was appointed Governor of New South Wales. Game clashed with his premier, Jack Lang, over moves to abolish the Legislative Council and, in May 1932, when Lang refused to pay State revenue to the Commonwealth, Game dismissed the Premier and his Cabinet.

In January 1935 Game left Sydney and in December became commissioner of the London Metropolitan Police. Game retired in 1945; he had been appointed K.C.M.G. on his departure from New South Wales and G.C.V.O. for his organizational work at the 1937 coronation, and was promoted to G.C.B. He died in 1961.
