The Sydney Maritime Museum was founded in 1965 by a group of individuals interested in restoring and preserving the 1902 Vice Regal steam yacht 'Lady Hopetoun'. The Museum was known originally as the Lady Hopetoun & Port Jackson Marine Steam Museum.

The Sydney Maritime Museum is a community based non-profit organisation dedicated to the preservation of Australia's maritime heritage. The Museum's collection includes maritime artifacts, historical photographs, books and maritime records along with a number of vintage vessels. Vessels in the Museum's collection include: 'James Craig', an iron barque built in 1874; 'Kanangra', a Sydney Harbour ferry built in 1912; 'Gretel II', a 12 metre yacht which competed in the America's Cup Race; 'Boomerang', an Edwardian schooner built in 1903; 'Protex', a motor launch built in the 1920s; 'John Oxley', a pilot steamer built in 1927; and 'Yendys', an 18 foot skiff built in the 1920s.

The Sydney Maritime Museum membership includes many dedicated volunteers who restore, operate and maintain the fleet of vintage vessels using traditional methods and skills.

Volunteer members of the Sydney Maritime Museum conducted an Oral History Project from 1983 onward. Margaret Reid, a volunteer, conducted the first series of interviews which she also transcribed. Margaret Reid conducted interviews with men and women involved in maritime industries and occupations and particularly sought out those who had some involvement with vessels in the Museum's vintage fleet.
