The German Evangelical Lutheran Church was established in Sydney in 1866, with financial support from the Evangelical Church in Germany. The church building in Goulburn Street in the city was completed in 1886. Church activities were suspended during World War II when the pastor, being a German national, was interned, and resumed in 1946. The church and its pastors were heavily involved in welfare work, particularly through the Kaiser Wilhelm Spende (German Relief Fund for Old and Destitute Persons) prior to World War II and by assisting prospective and newly arrived German migrants after the war. Church pastors included George Schenk, Gustav Lahusen, Gerhard Wittmann and Waldemar Kostizen.
