Marie Olive Armstrong (nee Stonehouse) was born in Sydney in 1928. At the age of 19 she joined the New Theatre in Newtown, one of Australia's oldest continuously performing theatres. For over 60 years she worked there as an actor, director, stage manager, choreographer and drama and dance tutor. She married to actor, John Armstrong in 1951. For many years she was a member of the Communist party until her resignation in 1985. She was awarded the Queens Jubilee Medal and the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for her voluntary work at the New Theatre.

John Victor Armstrong was born in 1924. After attending Canterbury Boys High School he operated a successful hairdressing business but dissolved it in order to take up an acting career. During World War II he served in the RAAF. He was active in the New Theatre from 1948 and became a dedicated member of the Communist Party. In 1982 he suffered a stroke and spent the rest of his life in a Canterbury Nursing Home where he died in 1984.
