  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Henry Lippmann was born in Berlin in 1921, the elder son of Leo and Ruth Lippmann (nee Saloschin). His younger brother Kurt was born in 1925. The Lippmanns were a Jewish family.
Henry, known as Heinz, attended an international ORT (Organisation for Rehabilitation and Training) school where he specialised in electrical engineering. In August 1939, ORT evacuated 100 boys to Britain, Henry among them. Henry was one of 36 ORT boys then transported from Britain to Australia, with other refugees from Nazism, on board the Dunera. Arriving in Sydney on 6 September 1940, Henry and others from the Dunera, were interned first in Hay (N.S.W.) and then in Tatura (Victoria) internment camps. Released in early 1942, he then enlisted in the 8th Australian Employment Company and was discharged in September 1946.
His parents and brother meanwhile, remained in Berlin and maintained a regular correspondence with Henry. Unable to migrate, they were transported to Warsaw on 5 April 1942. The last news received from them came via the Red Cross in June 1942.
