• ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
  
  Arthur Phillip was appointed first Governor of the colony of New South Wales on 12 October 1786. He was commander of the First Fleet which sailed from Spithead on 31 May 1787 and disembarked at Port Jackson, New South Wales, on 26 January 1788.
  In December 1792, suffering from poor health, Phillip returned to England. He resigned his post as Governor on 23 July 1793. He died in 1814.

  This copy of the last will and testament of Arthur Phillip was `Extracted from the Principal Registry of the Probate Divorce and Admiralty Division of the High Court of Justice In the Prerogative Court of Canterbury.'

  This extract was formerly bound with letters written by Phillip to Sir Joseph Banks, with the spine title `Letters and will of Capt. A. Phillip, MSS'. They were disbound, deacidified and repaired in October 1983.
  In 1993, the letters were removed and placed with the papers of Sir Joseph Banks. They are located at Series 37 of the Sir Joseph Banks Electronic Archive : http://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/Banks
  A microfilm copy of the letters is located at CY3002, frames 31-142.
