  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Helen Halse-Rogers was born at Ryde, Sydney, in 1914. She went to Meriden School, Strathfield, and began a social work course at the University of Sydney in 1934. At that time specialised courses were run at the Board of Social Studies. They comprised case work and field work. Helen Halse-Rogers started with the Children's Library Movement, then with University Settlement at Chippendale, Sydney, later the Queen's Jubilee Fund, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, and her last placement was at the Council of Social Service which had been established in 1936. She then returned to the Board and stayed there for 37 years. She was associated with Meals on Wheels which started in 1956 and was instrumental in the establishment of retirement villages. The Housing Commission grew out of the Board's work as well. Helen Halse-Rogers was secretary of the Social Workers' Association and a member of the Lord Mayor's Committee. In 1967 she was appointed a part time Commissioner of Housing and travelled throughout New South Wales reviewing welfare housing. After her retirement she was on the Allocation Committee. This oral history interview was conducted by Betty Marshall.
