  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Enid Davis was born in India in 1914. She graduated from the University of Sydney in 1936 and then did a social studies course from which she graduated in 1937. In 1939 she went to the New York School of Social Work for 6 months and arrived back in Australia just before the outbreak of World War II in 1939. She enrolled at the Red Cross as a medical social worker. Enid Davis lectured at the newly established social work course at the University of Sydney from 1941 to 1947. After this she went to Concord Hospital, Sydney, for a year and was engaged in the rehabilitation of returned soldiers. She then went to Tamworth and thence to Goulburn as head social worker at a new psychiatric hospital. A year later whe went back to Red Cross House, Sydney to begin a new venture in patient/family work. This was to be her work for the next 20 years. She then worked at the Chest Unit at Royal North Shore Hospital for 10 years and retired in 1979. This oral history interview was conducted by Betty Marshall, volunteer at the State Library of New South Wales.

    Enid Davis talks about her education in social work, as well as her experiences as a lecturer in the course at the University of Sydney. She also describes her professional life at Concord Hospital, Red Cross House, Sydney, Tamworth and Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney.
