  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Joy Moran was born in 1920 at Marrickville, Sydney. Having obtained a cadetship at Child Welfare she went to the University of Sydney to study social work in 1941. She became a professional assistant at Child Welfare doing case reports on fostered wards. After her marriage she returned to work in 1954 at St Andrews Family Centre, Sydney. In 1959 she went to work at the Parramatta District Hospital where she was interested in psychiatric work. From 1963 to 1966 she worked at Parramatta Mental Hospital and then at the Psychiatric Outpatient Centre established by the Parramatta District Hospital. She was invited in 1967 to the Royal North Shore Hospital and 18 months later went as senior social worker to Gladesville Hospital and with the inter-disciplinary staff set up the unit for training patients for 'outside living'. Joy Moran retired in 1977. She graduated in 1987 from Macquarie University, Sydney, in Ancient History and Philosophy. She was interviewed by Betty Marshall, a volunteer at the State Library of New South Wales.
