    Arthur Ruffels was born in 1876 at Colyer's Leigh, a property at Moss Vale managed by his father and where, after sub-division, the family ran their own dairy farm. Arthur worked on the farm and at the Manchester Square butter factory. He later moved to Sydney working as a gardener at Burwood and Mosman before joining the Police Force in 1901.
