  • General note

The portrait, said to be James Mudie, was acquired from his great-great grandson. It was probably painted in London in the 1810s while he was compiling his "An Historical and Critical Account of a Grand Series of National Medals" (London, 1820). His social world then included the numerous artists he had contracted to work on his medals.
The vendor recalls that this portrait had always been known as "Major Mudie" by his family.
The Mitchell Library Manuscripts collections holds correspondence by and about Mudie.
