Pat Burges papers, ca. 1940 – ca. 1977, relating to the Forestville Progress Association and local history of Forestville, Sydney. Forestville is a residential suburb within the shire of Warringah, situated in the northern Sydney region, positioned on Middle Harbour and densely forested. In 1856 James French began logging the local bushland, establishing a two saw milling operation. Despite this early settlement, the region's inaccessibility deterred significant settlement until well into the twentieth century. A government soldier settlement scheme availed Forestville land to returned servicemen from 1917. This scheme proved unsuccessful due to poor soil and the agricultural inexperience of the solders. Road transportation was greatly improved in 1924, when both the Roseville and Spit Bridges connected the Warringah Shire with the lower north shore. However, substantial residential interest was not aroused until the post World War II period. An increase in the desire for home and car ownership occasioned an unprecedented suburban push. Returned soldiers and civilians alike flocked to the outer Sydney suburbs seeking available and affordable land. The quite recent establishment of Forestville institutions reflects the post war boom. The suburb's name itself was not conferred until 1946.
