    Eric Mitchell was born Eric Heckenberg in 1905. At the age of five Eric Mitchell was placed by his mother in the Randwick Asylum for the Relief of Destitute Children. When the Asylum was required for returned soldiers during World War I the children were relocated to Darlinghurst. At the age of ten Mitchell was sent to the country to work, and became interested in bush poetry.
  • Scope and Content
    Eric Mitchell reminisces about life in the bush and his jobs which included drover's assistant, dairyhand, labourer, wheat loader, and painter on the railways. Some of his memories have been rendered into verse and he also recites some of Henry Lawson's poetry. He invites his brother to recall their uncles, the Heckenbergs, who were competition woodchoppers.
