  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Shane Gould was born in Sydney in 1956. After several years living in Fiji the Gould family returned to Sydney and in 1970 Shane joined the Ryde Swimming Club under coach Forbes Carlile. In April 1971, while competing at Crystal Palace in London during the Australian Swimming Union European Tour, she set a new world record for the 200 metres freestyle; by the following January she would hold all five freestyle world records from 100 metres to 1500 metres. At the Munich Olympics in 1972 she won five individual medals: 3 gold, a silver and a bronze - the youngest athlete to win an Olympic gold medal for Australia and the first woman to win 3 gold medals at the one games in world record times. Shane won 7 titles at the National championships in February 1973 and later that year retired from competitive swimming.
