The Royal Australian Institute of Public Administration (RAIPA) was a professional body whose chief aims and objectives were to develop professionalism in the public sector and advance the study and practice of public administration.

RAIPA had its origins in the 1920s. The British Institute of Public Administration was established in 1922 and the first Australian Group affiliated with it was inaugurated in South Australia. The NSW Regional Group, later the New South Wales Division, was established in 1935. The first issue of Public Administration (NSW), Journal of the Institute of Public Administration, NSW Regional Group, appeared in 1937, and was renamed Australian Journal of Public Administration in 1976. Professor R. N. (Dick) Spann, long time editor of the journal, died in 1981. A memorial to his life and work, the annual R. N. Spann Memorial Oration, was launched in 1983. In 1954 the Institute of Public Administration was granted authority to use the prefix Royal.

In January 1980 the Australian Institute of Public Administration (AIPA) was established from the seven Australian Regional Groups of the British RIPA. In November 1982 AIPA was granted authority to use the prefix Royal. In February 1992 the Royal Australian Institute of Public Administration changed its name to Royal Institute of Public Administration Australia.
