In the early 1950s Lionel Wood became interested in building a model of the P.S. Sophia Jane - the first steam boat to come to Australia.

Wood's research into the ship began in 1955 and continued for almost three years. Progress lapsed following his marriage in 1959, until late 1972 when a new start was made on the book.
