    Harry Seidler (1923- ) was born at Vienna, Austria, second son of Max and Rose Seidler. In 1937 Harry Seidler's brother Marcell (1919-1977) was sent to England to study the textile business. In 1938, after the annexation of Austria, Harry Seidler went to England where he lived at Cambridge. He attended Cambridge Technical School where he undertook a building course. In 1940 Harry and Marcell Seidler were interned by the British government and then later transported to Canada where Harry remained in an internment camp until October 1941. After his release from the internment camp Harry Seidler attended the University of Manitoba where he graduated Bachelor of Architecture in 1944. He was awarded a scholarship to Harvard University, U.S.A. in 1945, where he studied under Walter Gropius and was awarded a Master of Architecture in 1946. He then studied visual aesthetics under Josef Albers at Black Mountain College, North Carolina, U.S.A. Between 1946 and 1948 Seidler worked with Marcel Breuer in New York and in April 1948 also travelled to Brazil where he worked with Oscar Niemeyer. On 20 June 1948 Harry Seidler travelled to Australia to design his parents house. He established his architectural practice in 1948. In 1951 Harry Seidler was awarded the prestigious Sir John Sulman Medal by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects for Rose Seidler House at Turramurra. Harry Seidler has won numerous awards and achieved international recognition for his commercial and domestic designs. He has been involved in major building projects in Australia and overseas. Major projects in Sydney include Australia Square, the M.L.C. Building and Grosvenor Place. Overseas projects include the Australian Embassy Paris. Seidler's work is frequently illustrated in architectural publications in Australia and overseas and there have been a number of works published on his architecture.
