  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Arthur James Vogan was born in Kent, England in 1859 and travelled to New Zealand in 1880. He arrived in N.S.W. ca. 1885 and was included as an artist in the 1885 Royal Geographical Society's 'Bonito' expedition to the Fly River area in British New Guinea. He later worked as an Australian representative illustrator for the Illustrated London News and was made a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (England). He became an advisor to British Mining interests and travelled extensively in Australia both privately and as a reporter on gold prospects. Vogan wrote ‘The Black Police: a Story of Modern Australia’ (Lond. 1891) and later wrote articles for Pacific Islands Monthly, 1930-37.
In the Boer War he was a Sergeant in the Prince of Wales Light Horse Brigade, 1901 and was instrumental in the capture of Commandant Scheepers in the Cape Colony. His great interest in archaeology led him to travel in the Pacific Islands, mainly New Caledonia, New Guinea and Fiji where he claimed credit for discovering ancient Chinese inscriptions on the wall of a cave in the Yasawa Islands (North-West Fiji).
Vogan died in Manly Hospital aged 89 on February 27, 1948 after a fall 12 days before.
