  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Papers of Mary Inman (nee Martin), daughter of Sir James Martin (1820-1886), politician and chief justice. Martin is the only person in the history of the state to have occupied all three roles of Attorney General, Premier, and Chief Justice. On 20 January 1853, he married Isabella, sister of W. A. Long and daughter of a wealthy ex-convict wine and spirits merchant. They had eight sons and seven daughters including Mary, who, along with her husband John Inman, founded Tudor House School in Moss Vale. The Tudor House School is a private, day and boarding, preparatory school for boys and girls. The school is Australia’s only preparatory boarding school and became co-educational in 2017.

  • Scope and Content
The collection consists of five boxes in which there are about 1,000 letters. Most letters remain in their envelopes. The letters have not been organised but are bundled. There is an oversize item, a copy of the Martin family tree.
Most of the letters are addressed to Miss Mary Martin, as she was, or to Mrs Mary Inman as she became following her marriage to Wilfred Inman in 1897, who founded the Tudor School. Mary was one of the children of Sir James Martin, premier of NSW and Chief Justice of that state. Mary was born in 1866 and lived for ninety years. There are two diaries by Wilfred Inman, 1893 and 1909, a scrapbook of clippings that have some connection to the Martin family, and a scrapbook of curious news clippings and photographs, and envelopes containing postage stamps.
