Interhelp was started in 1984 as a group that practiced empowerment in personal and community networks including womens health, parenting, community arts, work with violent offenders, TAFE programs and the public service.

The movement started in The Channon, Northern Rivers region of NSW in 1984 and a national network developed in 1985. There were active groups in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Canberra during the period of 1984-1993
