  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Valda Lyle was a member of the Australian Society of Archivists and the Executive Secretary of the Royal Society of New South Wales. She also worked for the University of Sydney in an honorary capacity for many years as the Guided Tours Co-ordinator, was made an Honorary Fellow of the University at a conferring of degrees ceremony held in the Great Hall on 27 May 1989

    Roger Lyle was a founding member of the South West Tasmania Committee (N.S.W.) which began in the 1970's and eventually became the Wilderness Society of NSW.
    This Committee was the force behind stopping the Franklin River Dam project in 1983.
    The Wilderness Protection Committee was formed in 1972. The Committee was formed by a group who expressed concern about the proposed route of the gas pipelines from South Australia to Sydney. The crew log books were discovered by Roger when he went aboard the Dee Why when it was being dismantled before the hulk was sun off the Southern Beaches to make a breakwater in the 1960's.

    Architectural plans and photographs relating to the design and construction of the Sydney Opera House. This was published in a commemorative issue of The Journal and Proceedings of the Royal Society of New South Wales, Vol. 106, 1973.

    The article was written by Michael Lewis the designer of the roof cladding of the Sydney Opera House. It was prepared by Valda Lyle as Executive Secretary of the Royal Society of New South Wales on completion of the project and organised through the Chairman of the Opera House Trust, Sir Phillip Baxter.

    The 16 mm film `Tasmania's South West : a Wilderness in Question' produced by Damon Smith. Sydney : AFTS, 1979 is housed separately from the records at MLMSS 8110.
