  • General note

"The photographs were shot over a six months period during the latter part of 1970 and early 1971 at a time when American servicemen from Vietnam were enjoying R & R [Rest & Recreation] breaks in Sydney. Many of them hung out in the Cross where all sorts of services had sprung up to help relieve them of their dollars. It was a unique time in the history of King's Cross. It was also the time when the famous, or was it infamous, Yellow House gallery was making an impact on the Sydney arts scene" -- Rennie Ellis, July 2000 (ML 290/73)
