  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Trades and Labour Council of New South Wales, established 1871, following merger with the Eight Hour System and General Short Hour League, formed in Sydney August 1869. It was disbanded July 1894 and re-formed as the Sydney District Council of the Australasian Labour Federation. The Council severed its association with the Federation 1 February 1900 and the Sydney Labour Council was established. In November 1908, its name changed to the Labor Council of New South Wales.

Th Council's role is to coordinate and plan activities of different unions, in strike action, negotiations with employers, in legislation through courts and tribunals. Other Functions include handling of dispute referred to Council, lobbying government on behalf of unionists and settling disputes and differences between unions. It consists of district councils and unions, or branches of unions, within New South Wales.

The Labor Council is part of the national trade union structure. As the state branch of the Australian Council of Trade Unions it implements A.C.T.U. policy and has direct representation on the A.C.T.U. Executive. The affiliation between trade unions and the Australian Labor Party, or, the Labor Movement, has enabled Labor Council office holders to occupy prominent positions in the party organisation both at the state and federal level.

The Pipeline Authority was established in 1973 be enactment of the Pipeline Authority Act 1973, which defines the functions, duties and powers of the Authority to construct pipelines for conveyance of petroleum through a national integrated system of pipelines. It was enacted by Prime Minister Gough Whitlam and his Labor Party to oversee the planning and construction of a National Pipeline system and its subsequent operation and maintenance. It was repealed or ceased 22 June 2006.

The East-Australian Pipeline Corporation Ltd was established as a subsidiary of the Australian Gas Light Company for the purpose of constructing the Moomba/Sydney natural gas pipeline. All of the shared in the Corporation were acquired by or on behalf of the Pipeline Authority pursuant to the provisions of the Haulage Agreement 17 May 1974
