The Sydney Mission to Seamen was formed in 1895 when the Church of England Seaman's Mission of Australia joined the international society of the Missions to Seamen. Its origins in NSW extend back to the Sydney Bethel Union which was established in 1822 to administer to the spiritual and physical welfare of merchant seamen. A Newcastle Mission was formed in 1903 and a Port Kembla Mission in 1941. In 1966, the Missions to Seamen NSW was established by the merger of the Sydney, Newcastle and Port Kembla branches, although Newcastle seceded in 1978.

Prior to the collection’s acquisition by the State Library it was arranged by archives students into series according to the material’s provenance, grouping the records by the administrative bodies which created them. This arrangement has been maintained and the box number sequence now reflects this.
