  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Maurice Melvaine, born 1920, son of Victor R. Melvaine who mined land for gold at Mt. Mutton near Uralla, N.S.W. until the 1950s. After serving in the Australian army and being wounded in Papua New Guinea in 1945, Maurice Melvaine moved to Sydney, to work in the motor industry. He successfully lobbied for the mining site and buildings at Mt. Mutton to be declared an historic site, and his papers include related geological reports, maps and correspondence with the Uralla Historical Society, Lands Department and Lionel Gilbert. Maurice Melvaine became a long term member of the Hornsby and Sydney City branches of the Liberal Party, and his papers include material related to the management of natural resources, land use and conservation. Melvaine was also an accomplished musician who studied at the Conservatorium of Music, Sydney, and composed and published a number of patriotic pieces for piano.

    Large dossier of papers labelled, Report on the Rocky River Goldfield at Uralla, N.S.W. by Maurice Melvaine, ca 1972, containing historical notes, photographs, newspaper cuttings, correspondence, maps and printed material related to research and publication of the report. Also includes N.S.W. government documents related to mines, and correspondence related to submissions by Maurice Melvaine to amend the Mining Act, ca 1973. A dossier of correspondence and printed ephemera, ca 1968-ca 1987, related to Maurice Melvaines' war service and musical career. A dossier labelled A.S.I.O. containing papers related to The Royal Commission on Intelligence and Security, ca 1975. A dossier labelled Politics containing correspondence within the Liberal Party related to issues of public debate, ca 1973-ca 1978. Dossier labelled Army containing correspondence and print material related to the war service of Maurice Melvaine, ca 1977.
