Mackellar Theatrical Society was established in 1955 by Violet and Hazel Meldrum. It originally staged its productions in Manly, beginning with 'Katinka', at the Embassy Theatre (later The Odeon). The Meldrum sisters directed 19 Mackellar productions at this site, all with Frederick Foxley as musical director.

In 1964, Mackellar moved to Balgowlah Boys High School. The Meldrums began to stage musicals more regularly, before retiring in 1971. Peter Imberger and Jackie Edwards were the most consistent directors in this period, with Murray Holmes becoming the regular musical director.

With the production of 'Mack & Mabel' in 1982, Mackellar's membership strove for a more professional standard. They hired Rodney Delaney and John Milson as directors, Simone Young and Greg Yurisich as musical directors, and produced adventurous musicals such as Sondheim's 'Company' and 'Merrily We Roll Along'.

After 'Jesus Christ, Superstar' (1986), the society contracted its activities, and in September of 1990 they voted to dissolve the group.
