Catholic barrister Jeff Kildea was appointed to the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) as the representative of the bishops of NSW in November 1981.

The CCJP was an agency established in 1968 by the Australian Episcopal Conference (AEC) of the Roman Catholic Church. It was responsible to it through the Bishops’ Deputy and the Episcopal Committee for Development and Peace.

The Commission consisted of twelve members appointed by various groups of Bishops. It was serviced by a staff of five from a permanent secretariat located in Sydney. The Commission met four times a year to consider all policy and approve all activities.

From 1974 the CCJP had the responsibility of preparing the annual Social Justice Statement for the Bishops.

In 1978 the Commission received a charter from the AEC. It was mandated to research, educate and take action where appropriate on matters of human rights and social justice.

In May 1987, the Australian Catholic Bishops abolished the CCJP following a structural review and the imminent expiry of the charter of the CCJP. It was replaced by the Bishops’ Committee for Justice, Development and Peace. In the same month, at a public meeting in Sydney, a group of Australian Catholics established the Catholic Coalition for Justice and Peace. Kildea was elected interim convenor and later appointed National Convenor.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference (ACBC) subsequently set up the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council (ACSJC) as the national and peace agency of the Catholic Church in Australia.
