  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

After arriving in Australia in 1804, Alexander Riley obtained a land grant situated near Liverpool that he named "Raby". This property was used to graze sheep for wool production. The Raby Saxon merino flocks formed the basis of a strain of merino sheep instrumental to the development of the Australian pastoral industry. Riley returned to England in 1817 and left the management of his business interests to his brother Edward. At the death of Edward in 1825, Edward's son (also called Edward) managed Riley's affairs. By 1830, Alexander Riley's estates included Raby, Burwood, Ousedale, and Maltou. In 1831 he acquired an additional property near Yass called "Cavan". The profits from Alexander's business ventures were shared with his son William who also assisted in the management of the Australian properties. -- Reference: Australian Dictionary of Biography.
