Judd’s Hurstville Brick Company Pty Ltd was established in 1884 by William George Judd, MLA for Canterbury from 1885 to 1887 and mayor of St Peters, Rockdale and Sutherland. The company supplied bricks to many suburbs over a wide area of the rapidly growing St George and Cronulla-Sutherland districts. In 1920 the firm was restructured, and remained in the hands of the Judd family until the business closed in 1974. The site of the brickworks, about thirty-one acres at Mortdale, was subsequently developed for the St George Institute of Education, now the St George Campus of the University of New South Wales.

The records include minutes of directors’ meetings, legal documents and correspondence, financial records and maps and plans.
