John Edward Docker, a literary critic and cultural commentator, was born in Sydney in 1945. He attended Randwick Boys’ High School and then the University of Sydney, where he graduated with First Class Honours in English in 1967. He obtained a Master of Arts with First Class Honours in English at the University of Melbourne in 1970 and a doctorate at the Australian National University in 1981. His research and writing encompasses Australian and English literature, literary theory, television drama, genocide and massacre studies, intellectual history, ethnic and cultural identity and diaspora. He has published several books and numerous articles and essays, some as co-author with his wife, historian Ann Curthoys.

The collection documents Dr Docker's career as an academic, writer and commentator. It largely comprises subject files and includes correspondence, research notes, draft and completed articles, conference papers and reviews, newscuttings and some personal papers.
