Frederick Percival John Gray (ca.1877-1950) was amongst the first cohort of Pharmacy students at the University of Sydney and was registered as a pharmacist by the Pharmacy Board of NSW on 9 May 1901. He was a long-standing member of the Pharmaceutical Society of NSW and was elected President in 1915. Gray was also a long-standing member of the Pharmacy Board of NSW, serving as President from 1913 at least until 1920 and as Honorary Treasurer in 1928. With a keen interest in cricket, he was a member of the Balmain District (Cricket) Club, joint donor with Dr Lesley Poidevin of the Poidevin-Gray Shield Competition among young cricketers (established in 1926), and was manager of the NSW chemists' cricket team in 1924.

The collection chiefly comprises 9 pharmacy prescription books, being tall narrow index books with leather or cloth binding. Prescription entries in each volume follow a chronological sequence and include: date at beginning of each day's transactions; prescription number; patient's name; prescription contents; price; initials of pharmacist dispensing prescription. Patients' prescriptions are indexed alphabetically under surname within the index at the beginning of each volume.
Also included are 1 sale of poisons register book and 1 stocktaking book.

Although the pharmacy to which the records relate is not identified within the papers, it is believed that, as they were recovered from the corner of Bondi Road and Penkivil Street, Waverley, they belonged to the pharmacy owned by F.P.J. Gray which was previously located on that site (158 Bondi Road).
