Allen & Unwin is the largest independent Australian publisher and distributor. It began publishing in 1976 as part of the United Kingdom-based parent company of the same name. In 1990, following the purchase of the parent company by Harper Collins, Allen & Unwin's Australian directors effected a management buy-out creating an independent company which is one of the biggest independent publishers in the world.
