Textual Records - (manuscript) - Scope and ContentIn this letter George King, captain of the ship Sarah, reports to the Lieutenant-Governor that a shipping official named John L. Roberts had attempted to procure the escape of a convict named Hopwood by offering bribes to King and his chief officer, Mr Bateman, to take Hopwood on their ship clandestinely. King's letter is attached to a letter from the Attorney-General Algernon Montagu to Josiah Spode, Assistant Police Magistrate, dated 16 February 1829 requesting him to bring Roberts to justice.
