  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Dr Douglas Joseph Anderson, born in 1907, was the elder son of William Joseph Anderson and Lucie Winifred Hill. In 1930 he completed medical studies, graduating with honours from the University of Sydney. He began his career as resident medical officer at Sydney Hospital before moving to the Royal North Shore Hospital of Sydney in 1932. In 1934 he moved to London and in 1936 he was admitted as a member of the Royal College of Physicians of London. On his return to Sydney he joined the staff of The Royal North Shore Hospital and began his private practice at Macquarie Street. In 1939 he was awarded a degree of doctor of medicine for his studies in tuberculosis. He contributed numerous articles, book reviews, letters and editorial columns to journals including The Medical Journal of Australia. When the Royal North Shore Hospital became a teaching hospital, he became a tutor in clinical medicine. He also served as chairman of the Medical Board, chairman of the Nurses’ Education Committee and president of the Royal North Shore Hospital Medical Association. He continued to work at the Royal North Shore Hospital until his retirement as senior physician in 1967. He died on 30 November 1970.

    Dr Douglas Jospeh Anderson’s papers, printed material and ephemera relating to his medical career and personal life. The collection comprises handwritten and typed correspondence, patient records, notes, financial records, minutes, newscuttings, diaries, photographs, invitations, personal scrapbooks, school reports, theatre programs, sketches and verse, etc., ca. 1911-1971
