  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Patricia Bruce Ward was born on 29 April 1921, the daughter of Jeannie and Cecil Webb. She was educated at North Sydney Girls’ High School, matriculating to the University of Sydney where she completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Diploma of Education. She then held teaching posts at a number of high schools.

In 1951, she married Professor John Ward at West Kirby, Merseyside. Their daughters Jennifer and Anne were born in 1953 and 1955.

After completing a course in librarianship, she began a distinguished record of service to the profession. Her offices in the Library Association of Australia included President of NSW School Libraries Section, 1974-1975; NSW Branch Councillor, 1976-1982; President, 1978-1979; and General Councillor, 1980-1981. She also served as Secretary of the Action Committee on Local Government Records from 1981. Her contributions were recognized by the award of Fellowship of the Library Association of Australia, and the award of Membership of the Order of Australia.

On 6 May 1990 the Ward family was among a party of steam train enthusiasts travelling on the 3801 steam train between Sydney and the Hunter Valley. Patricia Ward, her husband Emeritus Professor John Ward, and their daughter Jennifer Ward, died after a commuter train crashed into the back of the steam train. On 28 June 1990, the ALIA NSW Branch held an evening of tribute to honour the memory of Patricia Ward.
