  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

From the 1860s, German families, predominantly from Baden Wuerttemberg, migrated to the Holy Land (Palestine, now part of Israel). At variance with the dominant Evangelical-Lutheran Church, the Templers, as they began to refer to themselves, migrated for religious reasons.
In 1923 Palestine became a British Mandate. Following the declaration of World War II in 1939, the British Adminstration authorised the surrounding of the Temple Society's settlements with barbed wire, effectively creating internment camps. On 31 July 1941, the transportation of the Templers to Australia was begun.
