  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Miles Franklin, author, 1879-1954, daughter of John Maurice Franklin and Susannah Margaret Eleanor Franklin, nee Lampe, was born at Talbingo, New South Wales. In 1906 she went to Chicago, where she worked for the National Women's Trade Union League of America, principally as co-editor of Life and Labor with Alice Henry. In 1915 she went to England, later joining the Scottish Women's Hospitals for Foreign Service, with which she served in Serbia 1917-1918. She remained in London until 1927, when she returned to Australia to live in Sydney. In 1931-1932 she visited USA and England. Her publications include six novels issued under the pseudonym Brent of Bin Bin and one under the pseudonym Ogniblat and Mrs Ogniblat l'Artsau. From 1927-c.1945 Mary Fullerton, and in the mid 1930's Jean Hamilton, acted as her agents in England, mainly in the publication of the Brent series, while Miles Franklin in turn acted as Mary Fullerton's Australian agent.

    A printed guide to the collection was compiled in the Manuscripts Section of the Mitchell Library. It includes a comprehensive index to all correspondents in volumes 6-50, 80-92, 103, 108, 113-121, and a list of Miles Franklin's book collection located at MLMSS 3691. Copies of the printed guide are located with the manuscript collection at MLMSS 364/1 and in the Mitchell Library Reading Room; a copy of the guide can be otained by contacting the Manuscripts Section.     Xerox copies of selected papers relating to Brent of Bin Bin novels and stories are filed at MLMSS 44. The literary notebooks (MLMSS 364/3/1-15) and diaries (MLMSS 364/4/1-7) are available on microfilms CY 3592 (diaries, 1935-1944), CY 3593 (diaries 1944-1954), and CY 2956 (literary notebooks, 1934-c.1948). Transcriptions of the shorthand diaries, 1926 - April 1936, are located at MLMSS 7022. Further papers of Miles Franklin are located at MLMSS 6035.
