  • Scope and Content
    1. Tanleboueyer / A native of the district of Oyster bay & the Wife to Manalargerna / was attach'd to the mission in 1830 / Bm. Duterrau [printed beneath image] "Turn over" [handwritten in ink at upper edge].
    2. Tanleboueyer wife to the celebrated Chieftain / Manalargerna, this woman labour incessantly to / promote the object of the Mission Tanleboueyer and / her sister were originally stolen from their country / by the Sealers when children & held in bondage until / emancipated by Mr. Robinson. She was superior to other natives both in person & intelligence and / possessed much dignity of manners, seldom ... A memoir of this woman will appear in / Mr. R's. publication [handwritten note]
    3, 5. Woureddy / A wild native of Brune Island one of Wm. Robinson's most faithful / attendants attach'd to the mission in 1829 / Bm. Duterrau
    4. Wourreddy was present at all Mr. Robinson's interviews with the blacks / through the intervention of this man Mr. R. has been preserved from ex= / treem [i.e. extreme] dangers when his life was about to be taken from him - / There is much history connected with this individual, a full account / will appear in Mr R's publication. / From the Courier Decr 20th 1833 / We had the pleasure the other day in visiting Mr Duterrau's collection of paintings / in Campbell St. to be agreeable surprised by remarkably striking portraits of some of / our old sable acquaintances the Aborigines of the Island, they are painted of natural / size ...     7. Truggernana / A native of the southern part of V.D. land & Wife to Woureddy / was attach'd to the mission in 1829 / Bm. Duterrau
    8. Truggernana has render'd very essential service to the / expedition on many occasions & in a most remarkable manner / Saved Mr. Robinson's life by swimming & propelling / at the same time a small spear of wood to which Mr. / Robinson was clinging while endeavouring to cross / the river Arthur to get away from some natives / who had form'd a plan to kill him. but not being / able to swim he owes his life to Truggernana [handwritten note]
    9. Manalarganer [or Nanalargerna] / A celebrated chieftain of the east coast of V.D. Land one of Wm. Robinson's / faithful attendants attach'd to the mission in 1831 / Bm. Duterrau
    10. Manalergana [i.e Manalarganer] as a warrior stood unrivalled amongst / the Aborigines, was considered a sage by his tribe - / Mr. Robinson in a most remarkable manner succeeded / in effecting a friendly communication with this Chieftain / & his tribe at the time the Military operation was in= / stituted, such was the commanding influence Mr. R. possess'd / over those singular people that at the first interview / Manalergerna left his native wilds & accompany'd / Mr. R. on all his missionary enterprises throughout / the Island to whom he continued faithfully attach'd to / the conclusion of the service in 1835 - / A memoir of this man will appear in / Mr. R's. publication / From the Courier Nov. 29th 1833 / ... Robinson / In 1829 Mr. Robinson was appointed by His Majesty's / Colonial Government Missionary to the Aboriginal Tribes / of Van Diemen's Land, perhaps few men ever engaged in / an undertaking so fraught with difficulties as that on which / Mr. Robinson enter'd, yet his ...     The pencil sketches are not signed or dated.
    Nos. 1, 3, 7, 9, 13 have "Turn over" handwritten in ink at upper edge.
    Other prints of Nos. 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12-13 are located at PXA 2004 and PXA 3168.
    No.6 is likely to be a tracing based on Francois Peron, "Voyage de decouvertes aux terres Australes ...", Paris, 1807-1811, p.33 (F 980/P Mitchell Library).
    No.11 is also inscribed with "The Cascades / Launceston"
    Bound by Corbett Binder, City Chambers, 243 Pitt Street, Sydney. The presence of this bookplate may indicate that the volume was part of the D.S. Mitchell, 1907 bequest.
