  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

On 31 July 1853 John Hardy, the son of Samuel Hardy I, a jeweller and watchmaker, and his wife Catherine Esther, nee Wilson, arrived in Sydney aboard the ship 'Plantagenet'. He was met in Sydney by his cousin Felix Wilson. About a fortnight after his arrival John Hardy established a business at Jamieson Street, Sydney. In March 1853, before leaving England, John Hardy entered in partnership with his brother Samuel Hardy II, a retail jeweller at St. Ives, Huntingdonshire, England. Samuel Hardy II continued in the jewellery retail business at St. Ives and at the same time bought goods for the partnership in Australia. The partnership continued until Samuel Hardy's death in 1865. John Hardy sent regular letters to his brother giving detailed information concerning the business in Sydney as well as information of a more personal nature.

From 1861 until 1865 John Hardy was joined in Sydney by his nephew Samuel Hardy III who returned to Sydney in 1869 to marry Emma Louisa Sparke. Samuel Hardy III returned to London with his wife and continued in the partnership with his uncle.

Between 1855 and 1934 Hardy Brothers operated from premises at Hunter Street, Sydney. In 1934 the business moved to Castlereagh Street, Sydney. In 1892 a branch of Hardy Brothers was opened in Brisbane with Walter Hardy, son of John Hardy as manager and in 1917 a branch was opened in Melbourne.
