    This work was sold as a pair with 'Funchal, Madeira', the artist's first sale in Sydney. They derive from sketches done on HMS Hyacinth. The purchaser, 'J. Evans' was actually George William Evans, former surveyor and artist tunred bookseller and stationer of the Colonnade, Bridge Street, Sydney from whom Martens rented a studio soon after his arrival in Sydney.
