  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Sydney Amateur Sailing Club was formed in October, 1872 and is one of the oldest yacht clubs in Australia. The foundation meeting of the Club took place in Tom Kearey’s Hotel on William Street in Octover 1872 when Captain J. H. Amora was appointed Commodore. In 1882 the Club obtained a waterfront site on Bennelong Point facing Sydney Cove, but soon after completion the land was resumed by the Government and a heavy loss was sustained. Since then, it has built club houses, boatsheds, moorings and other faculties for its members, organised regattas and races, and fostered and encouraged yachting in Sydney.

'The Amateurs' published in 1972 by the Sydney Amateur Sailing Club Committee, documented the first 100 years of the Club.
