C. K. Thompson's Old Bob's Birds, published in Sydney in 1950, was written after Thompson received from Will Lawson a copy of Lawson's unpublished work `Jack Kookaburra's World'. Thompson, who had a reputation as a writer for children, acknowledges his debt to Lawson's work in the Foreword to Old Bob's Birds.
