  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    George Roberts, a theatre scene painter, lived in Paddington in the late 1850s and early 1860s and made many drawings of the area. He lived in Victoria Street in Paddington in the 1860s.

  • Scope and Content
    1. Albion Mills March 3rd 1840 [1841]
    Inscribed faintly in pencil at lower right: `Albion Mills 3rd March 1840'

    Albion Mills and Inn, at Darling Harbour, were destroyed by fire on the night of 3rd March 1841. It is possible a later drawing made by Roberts - from memory - some years after an event which took place on 3 March 1841

    It is likely that the Fishers Creek watercolours (nos 2-5) show a bush in Paddington, possibly near the Glenmore Falls, or the stream which fed it. A Mr Fisher leased the Glenmore Distillery in the early 1850s. Point Piper Road is now Jersey Road.

    Out of copyright: Artist died before 1955.

    The Library has two other collections of his work at DL Px 52 and PXA 2961. The City of Sydney Public Library also has a collection of 9 watercolours, copies of which are at PXB 104.
